Throwback Thursday: Jasmine Hines Breaks State Scoring Record

MISportsNow’s Throwback Thursday is looking back at northern Michigan’s greatest games, from buzzer beaters to state finals. This marks the 16th in the series.

CENTRAL LAKE – Central Lake’s Jasmine Hines became the most prolific scorer in Michigan high school basketball history back on February 24, 2011.

Having already surpassed the girls state record for career points and rebounds (1,692), Hines entered Central Lake’s home game against Traverse City Christian 19 points shy of becoming Michigan’s all-time leading scorer for boys and girls – a mark established by former Mio star and college basketball head coach Jay Smith back in 1979.

“It’s a great accomplishment, but I honestly couldn’t do it without my team,” Hines said following the game. “We’ve played together forever, and they know how to get me the ball, and I can’t get the ball to myself and score. I owe it all to them really, because they’re all unselfish and we play great together.

“It’s still special because it’s our last home game. The last time I’ll ever play in this gym. It’s nice to go out with a bang.”

In addition to state career marks, Hines also owns the single season records for rebounds (478) and points (935).

Following her prep career, Hines starred for Michigan State’s women’s basketball program and spent time with the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and Pallacanestro Bellinzona of Switzerland.

Hines is currently a development assistant with MSU’s athletic department and the Spartan Fund.
