Melissa Smith co-anchors 9&10 News’ ‘the four’, an hour-long lifestyle show every weekday at 4 p.m. She joined the ‘the four’ family to provide people with stories that can impact their lives and open people’s eyes to the good going on in northern Michigan. She’s a firm believer that the good we do in our own lives, impacts the world around us and can ultimately help make this world a better place.
Melissa started in television news in 2006 at WLNS in Lansing during her senior year at Michigan State University. She eventually moved north and spent more than a decade as an anchor and reporter in Traverse City for the NBC affiliate. During that time, Melissa also worked on a monthly health segment with Munson Medical Center for a number of years that showcased her passion for health and wellness.
Outside of news, Melissa is an advocate and volunteer for The ALS Association Michigan Chapter and The National Multiple Sclerosis Michigan Chapter. She is also an avid animal rights advocate and a member of the northern Michigan animal rights group, For Animals Traverse City. Her goal is to get animals out of shelters and adopted across the country and educate people on the emotional intelligence of all animals. Being an acoustic neuroma survivor, Melissa is involved with Michigan Acoustic Neuroma Association support group. She underwent a 13-hour surgery at the University of Michigan Hospital in February 2018, and now wants to help others who might be going through a similar situation.
Melissa is thrilled and grateful to be a part of ‘the four’ working with an amazing group of women where she can focus on the stories she’s passionate about including health & wellness, animal welfare, family matters, women’s issues and environmentally conscious topics. She believes in the power of positive thinking and focuses on the quote by author, Dr. Wayne Dyer who said, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
Melissa is a proud 2006 alum of Michigan State University’s Journalism School and MSU’s Honors College. Her blood runs green!
When she’s not covering stories, you’ll find Melissa along the beaches and aqua waves looking for Petoskey stones or hiking and biking through the northern Michigan woods with her husband, Phil. They’re both plant-based foodies and love coming up with new plant-based recipes and ideas. The Smiths live in Traverse City with their three fur babies, Bella, Stella & Lola. Melissa would love to hear from you and encourages people to contact her about stories that could help impact the lives of others.
