Federal and State Taxes Due Tonight Before Midnight

After a month long extension, federal and state taxes are due tonight before midnight.

Tax preparation services in the area have been busy helping with people filing at the last minute. They say, because of the coronavirus, new laws and guidelines have made this tax season confusing.

Stimulus payments and unemployment benefits have added another layer of complexity to the already daunting task, but if you don’t owe payment and can’t have your taxes filed tonight, there’s still hope.

“If they haven’t filed their tax return, yes they should probably file an extension and I’ll go ahead and file that for them,” said Katie Durant Merritt, Owner of Nickerson Tax Service of Cadillac. “You are avoiding a non-filing penalty but if you owe money, no you are not going ahead and extending out the time to pay.”

By applying for an extension, you’ll have until Oct. 15 to file your taxes.
