Traverse City Family of 12 Surprised with New Heating System

A warm house to come home to is something many of us take for granted, but for one couple in Traverse City their old furnace was barely keeping them and their 10 kids warm.

“Is this the time it’s just not going to kick on?” says Dan Carlson about his old furnace.

Winters were a stressful time for the Carlson family.

“I’d lay awake at night sometimes listening, just to see it would run,” says Dan.

His wife Mary says, “He would wake up in the middle of the night, every 10 minutes like is it running, is it not running.”

Dan and Mary have 10 kids, many adopted with special needs spanning from Down syndrome to seizures from head trauma in infancy.

“A lot of care and effort into taking care of them but it’s something we clearly keep doing,” Dan says. “Just because there are more kids that need that help and need a family.”

The Carlson’s situation and their community involvement made them the perfect candidate for ‘s annual Furnace Makeover.

Leslie Roe, co-owner of says, “It’s just clear, it’s evidence by the love of their family, the love of their community how deserving they are for this.”

Precision installed a brand new furnace, water heater, humidifier, smart thermostat and air filtration system. Valued at $8,000.

“Having a furnace that doesn’t work to a furnace that they can feel, just have peace of mind about that for years to reduce heating bills, they’re not going to have to worry about waking up in the morning in a really cold house,” says Roe.

Now, Dan and Mary can sleep soundly knowing their family is nice and warm.

Dan says, “It’s a huge relief and to know it’s not a solution for this next winter, it’s for winters and winters to come.”
