Hook & Hunting: Deer Numbers This Hunting Season

Firearm season started just last week, and the DNR says it is shaping up to be a pretty good one.

While the DNR says deer numbers are a little down compared to last year, it is still a good season.

Numbers are right on par with the 2017 season.

They have checked about 12,000 across the state just during firearm season alone.

They expect to check about 50,000 deer for all hunting seasons combined.

Overall, the DNR says this has been a good year and hunters have been happy.

“I think it’s been an absolute great season, I think we have seen a lot of happy hunters,” Ashley Autenrieth, DNR Deer Program Biologist. “We’ve seen some absolutely stunning bucks come through, really healthy looking does, we actually aged here a 10 year-old buck, and it’s the oldest I’ve ever aged in Michigan for a buck.”

The DNR says if hunters ever have any questions, they are always just a phone call away
