Hook & Hunting: Text a Great Lakes Buoy

If you’re an angler looking for the latest information on water conditions in the Great Lakes, all you have to do is pull out your phone.

There are now buoys in the water equipped with sensors to track changes.

These include wind speed, wave height and water temperature.

Lake Erie has 20 buoys with this service helping experts survey the lake as a whole.

We spoke with a local fisherman about how this service can benefit you before heading out for a catch.

“Well on the Great Lakes I could see it being a big thing. People are always on the Facebook, texting, and asking other anglers what the wave report is out there. I think with that technology they could just zone right in to that and get the information,” said Nick Ruppel, who lives in Cadillac.
