CADILLAC — ReLeaf Michigan and several community partners are seeking volunteers to help plant 20 trees starting at 8:45 a.m. May 8 at Baker College.
The project will expand the tree canopy near the Cadillac Area YMCA garden and other locations throughout the campus.
Volunteers are asked to meet at 8:45 a.m. May 8 at the Cadillac Area YMCA at 9845 Campus Dr. to sign in, enjoy refreshments and watch a planting demonstration led by experts.
Participants should wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing. Organizers said volunteers should bring a shovel, hard rake and work gloves if they have them. The event will occur rain or shine until noon and no prior planting experience is necessary.
Trees provide significant benefits to communities by improving air and water quality, reducing childhood asthma rates and enhancing economic vitality, organizers said.
ReLeaf Michigan is a 38-year-old non-profit organization that partners with communities across Northern Michigan to replenish tree canopies.
Funding for this project is provided by the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program.
Local partners for the event include the Cadillac Area Land Conservancy, North Country Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area, Cadillac Area YMCA, Michigan State University Extension, Wexford Conservation District and the Wexford-Missaukee Intermediate School District.
