It’s a term that’s popping up more and more– gaslighter. But what does it mean? And is it happening to you?

Dr. Monica Vermani is a clinical psychologist, wellness coach, and author. She joined ‘the four’ LIVE to help us recognize the strategies of a gaslighter and how to prevent it from happening to you.

According to Vox, the phrase “to gaslight” refers to the act of undermining another person’s reality by denying facts, the environment around them, or their feelings.

Dr. Vermani has put together these five strategies of the gaslighter:

Being aware of the strategies and behaviors of gaslighting is the best form of prevention and self-protection

  1. Destabilization: gaslighters deliberately challenge the perceptions and realities of their target
  2. Deception: gaslighters intentionally lie and deceive to confuse their target
  3. Denial: gaslighters deny their target’s truth and their lies, even in the face of evidence to the contrary
  4. Deflection: gaslighters change subjects, shift focus, and change lanes when confronted with their behaviors
  5. Manipulation: gaslighters, when threatened with abandonment, will shower their target with praise and affection in an effort to maintain control
