Working families will be getting more help thanks to an expansion to the Michigan Tri-Share Child Care Pilot program.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the expansion last week, and it’s aimed at allowing families the option of high quality and affordable child care.
With the Tri-Share Program, the cost of child care will be split three ways between an employee, their employer and the state.
A common reason businesses see potential employees not take the job is the lack of help when it comes to child care.
As one of the biggest employers in Otsego County, Sunfrog Shirts is excited to offer these benefits to their employees.
“We’re excited to find those people that are at home and that learn about this and say ‘hey for just one third of the child care cost I can now join the workforce’ and we hope that they find SunFrog as their first stop,” said CEO Josh Kent.
SunFrog be working with the Otsego County Economic Alliance, who will act as the hub in the area for participating businesses.
“We’re going to coordinate those payments among those three entities and get it to their child care provider and be able to get everybody on the same page and smoothly working,” said Lisa McComb, executive director of the Otsego County Economic Alliance.
One working mother, Samantha Irish has already been taking advantage of the program. “It’s still super hard to go back to work, to find affordable daycare because daycare just isn’t that affordable anymore,” she said. “It’s very expensive and you want to find a place where you feel your kid is safe.”
