This semester, Northwestern Michigan College students in the Business Professionals Communication class completed the eighth annual Food For Thought project Monday night by handing out boxes with all the ingredients to make Thanksgiving dinner to community members through Big Brothers Big Sisters.
“It’s so inspiring to see like what we can do for those people and know that they’re going to have a great Thanksgiving,” said Rachel Hollow, a student at Northwestern Michigan College.
On top of getting everything to make a Thanksgiving dinner, families also received a bag filled with snacks and activities to stay entertained over the holiday break.
Hollow says some of the activities in the bag include: play-dough, drawing supplies, puzzles and board games.
Students worked with more than 20 businesses and organizations learning skills they will take beyond the classroom to make the project possible.
“We had to learn how to write professional emails, reach out to local businesses and learn some problem-solving skills,” said Hollow. “We also had to figure out how to keep things cold, where we were going to store it, how we were going to distribute it.”
“This type of learning, I believe personally, helps me better. I struggle with dyslexia and ADD,” said Addison Haworth, a student at Northwestern Michigan College. “We’ve had a lot of growth, a lot of different challenges that we’ve had to overcome, a lot of strengths that we’ve been able to show through this class and a lot of different things that we’ve been able to acquire.”
More than a hundred families are extra thankful this thanksgiving because the students gave out more than 125 boxes.
