Contractor Boat Connected To Enbridge Hits Mackinac Bridge

The Coast Guard is investigating after a boat connected to Enbridge ran into part of the Mackinac Bridge.

It was dark last Wednesday when the 30-foot boat operated by an Enbridge contractor hit a pier on the north end.

There was no structural damage, but it did scrape the steel that surrounds the concrete pier.

Four crew members on board had minor injuries. They were working to place surveillance cameras in the straits.

In a statement, Ryan Duffy, a spokesman for Enbridge, stated:

“On November 3, a crew transport boat operated by a contractor supporting the installation of onshore cameras to monitor the Straits of Mackinac, was involved in a maritime incident in the vicinity of the northern end of the Mackinac Bridge.

The boat operator reported that four individuals on board sustained minor injuries; all four received medical attention and were cleared to return to work.  The incident was reported to the Mackinac Bridge Authority and the United States Coast Guard.

The event occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. when the crew was returning from St. Helena Island to St. Ignace. The 30-foot-long boat safely returned to harbor under its own power.

Safety is paramount in all Enbridge operations and projects, and Enbridge is committed to maintaining a safe environment for its employees, contractors and the communities in which we live and work. Remaining work in the Straits this year will be conducted during daylight hours, including transportation of work crews.”
