Grayling Getting New Five Story Apartment Building

The City of Grayling announced they are getting a new five-story apartment complex right downtown. According to the city, Sawmill Lofts, LLC is planning to replace two vacant buildings right downtown next to Michigan Brew. The development will include 42 residential units, which will be studios, one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms.

The project comes at the same time Gov. Whitmer announced her new $100 million , which will offer 2,000 rental housing units throughout Michigan.

Zoning Administrator and Economic Development Director for the City of Grayling, Erich Podjaske, said this new project was much needed for the area. He said it’s been in the works for three years and the community is excited to see the opportunities it brings to Grayling.

“It’s a huge (housing) shortage… just like it is all across the country… and Michigan in general,” he said. “We don’t have rentals. We’ve actually had people and businesses talk about how they can’t get workers here because they can’t find a place to rent.”

The project is expected to be complete in 2022.
