When people visit Charlevoix, they may notice homes that look like they belong in a children’s storybook. Those are the Mushroom Houses!
There are 28 homes built and designed by Charlevoix native Earl Young from 1919 to the end of his career in the 1970s.
No two of these homes are the same. Earl Young loved nature, that’s why all of his homes are made from materials like stones and boulders that he gathered from the shoreline of Lake Michigan.
But only one home was purposefully made to resemble a mushroom.
