Otsego County Man OK After House Fire

Posted: Updated:

A grandfather and his two grandkids are OK after his home caught fire in Otsego County.

The Otsego County fire chief tells us it all started around 10:00 Friday night at a home in Hayes Township when something in the garage caught fire.

9&10's Taylor jones went to the home Saturday she brings us more details.

“When I got there the whole garage was totally engulfed in flames,” says Matt Daly, neighbor.

This is the damage after this home went up in flames. The Otsego County fire chief says they believe it started in the garage and there was a man in a wheelchair and his grandkids there at the time.

“When the page went when off, they said that they have a fully engulfed structure fire with a person inside in a wheel chair and they are having difficulty getting him out, so it raises your level up a little bit,” says Chief Dave Duffield, Otsego County Fire Department.

The two grandkids were able to get out but weren't able to get their grandpa out. That’s when neighbors stepped in.

“I came around the block and came up to the house and started yelling, seeing if anyone was inside and heard a couple of kids in the woods and they told me their grandpa was on the back deck and he couldn't get off and so I went around back and that's when the other neighbor, Rick came around and we hoisted him up and over the railing,” says Daly.

The home was destroyed.

Those who helped save the man are thankful everyone is OK.

“I think if we wouldn't have saw it when we did, it could ended a lot worse. It's just something that needed to be done, I wouldn't call myself a hero, it's just to step up and be there in a time of need and everyone else did the same thing, so I don't think I’m special in anyway,” says Daly.

The chief tells us the fire isn't suspicious and the cause is undetermined at this time.
