HS Football Preview: Central Lake & Gaylord St. Mary

Posted: Updated:

Our high school football two-a-day preview total reaches 46 teams with visits to a pair of Ski-Valley teams: Central Lake and Gaylord St. Mary.

Only 19 players will man the Varsity roster in Central Lake but it could be an example of quality over quantity.

Seven starters return on each side of the ball and the Trojans expect to be particularly strong up front.

So with that solid foundation in place Head Coach Rob Heeke is setting some lofty goals for the team to achieve in a tough Ski-Valley Conference.

"We just feel like on both side of the ball our kids are more experienced and ready to excel hopefully," Heeke said.  "That's the game plan.  Have a lot of fun.  We want to have a lot of fun and compete for the conference.  That's the plan."

The Trojans will get an early test as they take on defending Ski-Valley North champ St. Ignace in Week 1.

In Central Lake, there was once a time when Gaylord St. Mary had 11 straight winning seasons.  However, it's been a few years now since they've had that much success.

Head Coach Kevin O'Connell finished 3-6 in his first season at the helm.

The Snowbirds graduated five seniors in May but with their roster growing this year the school has been able to add a JV team for the first time in years.

Their players are also working on a new attitude for the 2014 season.

"Before we didn't have thementalityy to win," Snowbird Senior Orion Beningo said.  "We were always losing so we thought we were going into a game losing but this year we are going to go into a game and win."

"It makes you not really want to play," Snowbird Junior Adam Nowicki said.   "It makes you want to go home, if you expect to lose why play."

So it stands to reason that the Snowbirds expect to win August 29th against Pellston.
