Two Accused of Adult Abuse, Sex Crimes in Chippewa County

Posted: Updated:

A Drummond Island couple is accused of abusing a vulnerable adult.

Police say the victim was left alone with her caretaker, Melissa Greiser's, boyfriend for hours.

James Shaul is on the sex offender registry and is a repeat offender in several states.

The arrests came from an investigation at the victim's home on Drummond Island.

"A health provider is there to protect and take care of them and instead ....she brought a sex offender."

Melissa Greiser is accused of leaving her boyfriend, a sex offender, with a woman she cared for.

Investigators say Greiser left the home -- and that's when James Shaul is accused of sexually assaulting the victim, and more.

"First, she shouldn't leave... And second with a sex offender. She was being paid to be there and she left for several hours and left him there with her."

The victim's physical disability tacks on a kidnapping charge for Shaul.

"The kidnapping charge encompasses a wide variety of things. If our victim wasn't confined or disabled it would be similar to being restrained or tied down and not able to leave."

The assistant prosecutor expects more charges for one or both suspects as the case move forward.

"The investigation is ongoing and it's one we've started a sexual assault response team and they are on it, various members have had experience to dealing with these cases."

Shaul could face life in prison because he's a repeat offender.
