UPDATE: Big Rapids Man Missing in West Michigan

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: We are learning tonight that Fred Byrnes car was found empty, around six o'clock this evening, just outside the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri.

There is still no sign of Byrne.

Police are searching for a missing Big Rapids man last seen leaving his mother's home in Ottawa County.

Officers say Fred Byrne was last seen around 3:00pm Tuesday after taking his son back to school at Hope College.

Byrne told his mother he was stopping at a nearby mall before going back to Big Rapids to buy a Valentine's Day gift for his wife.

Byrne is 49-years-old, white, 6'3" and 290lbs. with blond hair and blue eyes.

He was driving a silver 2005 Chevy Malibu with a Michigan license plate reading BSY 0298. There is a "BR" sticker on one side of the back window and a "Hope College Parent" sticker on the other side. The license plate as a Hope College cover.

Byrne has not contacted any family or friends, which is very out of character with him.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety at (231) 527-0005.
