NEW DETAILS: Cheboygan Memorial Hospital Closing Today - Northern Michigan's News Leader

NEW DETAILS: Cheboygan Memorial Hospital Closing Today

Posted: Updated:

Cheboygan Memorial Hospital is closing today, Tuesday, leaving 403 employees without a job.

It's the largest employer in Cheboygan County.

Northern Michigan's News Leader learned early this morning that the final step of CMH's sale to McLaren Health Care was supposed to be finalized today, but that won't happen.

Instead, the hospital in Cheboygan closed today after hospital leaders say federal regulators halted the sale.

Cheboygan Memorial Hospital filed for bankruptcy protection March 1st.

Last week a bank judge approved a sale to McLaren Health Care, but now hospital officials say there is a problem with licensing and recertification.

The hospital says that the Center for Medicare Services will not grant a waiver to let McLaren take over right away.

More surveys have to be done and the necessary paperwork could take anywhere between 45 to 180 days.

A spokesperson for McLaren says the sale as originally planned will not happen.

All services including the ER are now closed and patients are encouraged to go elsewhere for treatment.

Besides the hospital, this closure will impact the Cheboygan Memorial Health Center, Women's and Children's Health Services and the Indian River Medical Center.

While the sale to McLaren will not go through, McLaren still plans to continue healthcare services in Cheboygan, though they will not include emergency care, diagnostics or surgical services.

If you have an emergency call 911, otherwise your options include McLaren - Northern Michigan in Petoskey, Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace, Charlevoix Area Hospital, Otsego Memorial in Gaylord or the Alpena Regional Medical Center in Alpena.

9&10's Christina Vecchioni and photojournalist Eric Davis have more details from Cheboygan.
