“They’re like wow thank you for sharing,” explained Jennifer Trzcienski, a library assistant at Houghton Lake Public Library.

A common reaction when she helps people date their family back to centuries ago.

“I love seeing their eyes when they find something, it’s awesome,” she explained.

Genealogy Time was created at the Houghton Lake Public Library to meet the increasing demand of people hooked on their family history.

“Genealogy is becoming more and more popular people are becoming more and more interested in it,” said Kim Young, the library director.

Jennifer helps them navigate databases, magazines, newspapers and more to help answer questions dating back as far as possible.

For herself — that’s back to the 1700’s.

“I can go back to at the Revolutionary War,” she said.

Trzcienski says that genealogy just kind of fell into her lap, but after seeing the reactions of those she’s helped, she can’t stop.

“I love seeing their eyes when they find something it’s awesome,” she says. “Genealogy is becoming more and more popular people are becoming more and more interested in it.”

However the library assistant’s research is not done when she leaves the library.

After finding the love for genealogy, Tzcienski made it a family affair.

Tzcienski will spend hours tracking down family members that share her same birthday.

“That’s one my goals, I was born on the Fourth of July so I said it be in DAR so that’s my goal right now.”

She’s is excited to continue to share her passion for researching past generations, with new generations to come.

“I would love to get the next generation, ya know, feet wet, and say ‘hey, you like history, this is how you get your family into the history, dive into history,'” she said.

The next sessions are June 5 and August 2, at 1p.m.
