Evart’s Cole Hopkins Signs With Central Michigan Wrestling

EVART – Evart senior Cole Hopkins signed his National Letter of Intent to wrestle at Central Michigan this week.

“They have had a lot of success in their program,” said Hopkins. “I wrestled with a lot of guys in the program and just the familiarity with the coaches, the wrestlers, everything.”

The Wildcat and soon-to-be Chippewa narrowed down his options to Central Michigan, Kent State, Cleveland State and Virginia Military Institute.

“I was probably like 12-13 years old when I first watched a CMU wrestling meet and I was like that would be awesome if I could wrestle there one day,” said Hopkins.

As a junior, Hopkins won the Division 4 171-pound individual state championship. He is currently training at 175 pounds and will most likely train for 174 when he makes the switch to college wrestling.

As he competes for the remainder of his senior year, he is bringing this college mentality with him.

“I want to better myself as a wrestler all-around and get to where I know I can compete with guys that are at the college level,” said Hopkins.

Continuing to wrestle at a higher level was an easy decision for Hopkins. He touched on how it all started and how it has become more than just wrestling for him now.

“I remember bringing a flyer home to my dad saying I wanted to try [wrestling] out and ever since then I’ve been going to tournaments every Sunday since I was a little kid,” said Hopkins. “Wrestling teaches you how to be disciplined in all areas of life like weight management, making sure you get your class and stuff done on time so that you can compete, all of that stuff factors into why I love wrestling.”
