The XFL is restarting in February under new owner Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his business partner Dany Garcia. Six former players from colleges in the 9&10 News coverage area, Central Michigan and Ferris State, will be playing in the league.
There are two former Chippewas who were drafted into the XFL, including wide receiver JaCorey Sullivan and quarterback Quinten Dormady.
Sullivan, a First Team All-MAC selection in 2019 and a Third Team All-MAC selection during his senior season last fall, was drafted by the Arlington Renegades.
Dormady, the Chippewas starting quarterback during the 2019 season after spending most of his college career at Tennessee and Houston, will play for the Orlando Guardians.
had been working as a youth safety advocate at his old elementary school in Muskegon since going undrafted in the NFL Draft back in April. He said he was at work when he got the call from the Renegades.
“The Renegades called me and were like ‘yo, we’re happy to have you on board’ and man, my emotions started running. It just felt like a dream come true,” said Sullivan. “It was kind of similar to how I feel like I would feel if I was going to the NFL. It’s been a long year for me so my emotions were running high. I couldn’t show that in front of the kids [at the school] or nothing so I kept my composure. But inside, man I wanted to run up and down the street. I wanted to run out to the playground and play on the playground at the school!”
In addition to the two former Chippewas, four former Ferris State Bulldogs were awarded XFL opportunities.
Najeem Hosein, a defensive back on the 2018 team that finished as national runners-up, will join Dormady on the Guardians.
Austin Edwards, a defensive tackle who played one game for the Atlanta Falcons in 2020 after his career at Ferris State, was drafted by the Houston Roughnecks, as was former Bulldog offensive lineman Dylan Pasquali. Pasquali was the Div. II Lineman of the Year last year and helped lead the Bulldogs to the national title.
Another player from last season’s National Championship team, defensive back , was added by the Seattle Sea Dragons after the draft concluded.
