Smith Leads Mackinaw City to District Title Days After Scary Car Crash

MACKINAW CITY – Mackinaw City senior Madison Smith was involved in a serious car accident on Oct. 27th. Less than a week later, she was back on the volleyball court to help the Comets win a district title.

Smith sustained a bruised right lung, a cut above her eye, contusions on the front and back of her head along with other cuts and bruises from the crash.

Despite the scary circumstances, Smith was cleared to play by her doctor four days later and played in the district tournament for Mackinaw City.

“I was very happy when they said I could play. I wasn’t really surprised I guess because I really felt like myself other than I was a little sore,” Smith said. “But I was just ready to play volleyball again. We never won a district here for volleyball so I wanted my senior season to end with a district win so I felt I had to be there for my team.”

She’s got huge grit. I mean, the girl does not want to lose,” Mackinaw City head volleyball coach Brooke Vieau said. “She will do anything and everything to win especially her senior year.  But we have made it very clear and she has agreed that you know, that if it comes down to it, her health is absolutely more important.”
