Muskegon WMC Tops Leland in Boys Soccer State Semifinals

KENTWOOD – The Leland Comets saw their 2022 season come to a close in a 3-1 Division 4 semifinal loss to Muskegon Western Michigan Christian on Wednesday night.

The Comets took a 1-0 lead into the halftime locker room, but the Warriors struck twice early in the second half to take a 2-1 lead before adding a late insurance goal for the final margin.

With the win, the Warriors avenged a 1-0 loss to Leland back in late August.  Western Michigan Christian will now face Ann Arbor Greenhills in the Division 4 State Championship game on Saturday in Novi.

“It’s always a good battle with those guys, and we got them earlier in the year, and they paid us back pretty well tonight,” said Leland head coach Rob Sirrine.  “They controlled the play, I’d say, probably two-thirds of the game, just a little bit different than the first time we played them, and we just didn’t create enough chances.”

This was Leland’s third appearance in the state semifinals in the past five seasons, they finish the 2022 season with a 19-4-1 record.
