SUTTONS BAY – Daniel Resendiz-Nunez’s goal in the 62nd minute was enough to power the Leland Comets to a 1-0 district championship victory over Charlevoix on Thursday night.
The game was scoreless through halftime, despite the Comets having a number of chances late in the first half.
Leland (17-3-1) had defeated the Rayders (11-5-4) by a 3-0 count earlier in the month.
“[A close game] is what we expected, and we told the kids, yeah we beat them 3-0 earlier in the season but it’s a playoff game,” said Leland head coach Rob Sirrine. “You’re playing under the lights, they’re going to bring it and they made adjustments, and credit to Charlevoix. They’re a great team. We’re excited, I tell the guys just one game at a time, the old cliche. Just one game at a time. We don’t even know who we play next but we’ll get ready for them.”
The Comets now advance to the regional round of play, where they will meet the winner of Friday’s game between Midland Calvary Baptist and Saginaw Valley Lutheran. That regional semifinal will take place at Big Rapids High School on Wednesday, October 26th at 7:00 p.m.
