Leland Wins Regional Championship Over McBain NMC

BIG RAPIDS – Leland senior Daniel Resendiz-Nunez scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of the game and the Comets defense posted a shutout as Leland beat McBain NMC 2-0 in Saturday’s Div. 4 Regional Championship game.

This marks the third regional championship in the last five seasons for Leland.

“They came in ready to play,” said head coach Rob Sirrine. “They like to play the game that we want them to play, which is technical, one or two-touch passing, possess the ball and get started on the front foot and keep it going through the game. So that’s what we’ve been building on all season.”

Sirrine is in his second season as the Comets head coach. The team has a 19-3-1 record this season and will play in the state semifinals, a tremendous turnaround after finishing just 9-14-1 a season ago.

“Losing districts last year was a terrible feeling,” said Resendiz-Nunez. “But winning regionals and districts this year, we’ve improved so much. This program has just risen so much more.”

Leland will face Muskegon Western Michigan Christian in the state semis on Wednesday at Crestwood Middle School in Kentwood.

McBain NMC finishes its season with a record of 15-4-4.
