McBain NMC, Leland Advance to Regional Championship at Big Rapids

BIG RAPIDS – It will be a clash of the Comets for a Boys Soccer Regional Championship on Saturday, as Leland and McBain Northern Michigan Christian won their regional semifinal matches on Wednesday night.

In the opening game of the evening, McBain Northern Michigan Christian defeated league rival Roscommon by a 2-0 count.  Blake DeZeeuw had 5 saves in net to earn the shutout.  Nathan Eisenga led the offensive attack with a goal and an assist.  Gideon Curell had the other Comet goal, and Ty VanHaitsma added an assist.  According to coach Mulder, this is the first win in a regional round for the Comets since 1995.

In the nightcap, Leland’s Daniel Resendiz-Nunez scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal late in the first half, as the Comets defeated Midland Cavalry Baptist, 2-1.

Weston Burda started the scoring for Leland early in the first half, but Midland Calvary Baptist scored later in the half to tie things up before Resendiz-Nunez broke that tie with a long range shot to make it 2-1 Leland at the half.

The Comets and Comets will now meet for a Regional Championship on Saturday, October 29th at 11 a.m. at Big Rapids High School.
