Buckley Moves Into First Place in Northwest Conference With 2-1 Win Over Leland

BUCKLEY – The Buckley Bears came from behind to earn a 2-1 win over the Leland Comets on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Bears improve to 4-0 in Northwest Conference play, and they now sit alone atop the league standings, a half game ahead of the Comets (4-1 NWC).

Leland got the scoring started when Daniel Resendiz-Nunez converted a penalty kick with about 10 minutes left in the first half.

Buckley would respond before the halftime break, when Garret Ensor scored to make it 1-1.

“As soon as they scored that goal, all of our heads kind of went down,” Ensor said. “We knew we had to battle it out and get that one, and then another to finish it off.”

Early in the second half, Buckley’s Beltran De Vera, who assisted on Ensor’s goal, scored what would prove to be the game-winner.

“To come in here, in the very first of a home and away series with them, to get the win is massive, because it puts us in the driver’s seat for the conference,” Buckley head coach John Vermilya said. “We’re 4-0, and we just have to keep that momentum going.”

The Bears travel to Glen Lake on Friday, while Leland plays host to McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Saturday.
