Red Wings End NHL Prospect Tournament With Win Over Maple Leafs

TRAVERSE CITY – The Detroit Red Wings prospect team closed out the NHL Prospect Tournament at Centre Ice Arena with a 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs prospects Monday.

Detroit’s four goals were scored by Mitchell Martin, Eemil Viro, Cross Hanas and Riley Piercey.

The Red Wings finish the tournament with a 2-1 record. Grand Rapids Griffins and Detroit Red Wings prospect  team head coach Ben Simon said after the game that this tournament means different things to different players.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for all these kids that come in with Detroit to learn not only our staff in Grand Rapids, because some of these kids will be in Grand Rapids, and I think it’s important to learn what the kind of pro daily routine is,” said Simon. “It means different things for different people I guess. Obviously if you’re a draft pick you’re more so being evaluated by Detroit. If you’re an invite, there are tons of scouts here.”
