TRAVERSE CITY – The Pit Spitters came into Monday night’s game against the Kalamazoo Growlers needing a win to keep their season alive. But the Growlers’ offense was just too much to handle as they ended the Pit Spitters run with a 9-5 win and a 2-0 series sweep.
The Growlers jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first inning and another in the third. A two-run double by the Pit Spitters’ Glenn Miller tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning.
The teams each scored two runs in the fifth inning but the Growlers started to pull away in the sixth with two RBI singles and a two-run double by Tolley Banks that gave the Growlers an 8-4 lead.
Traverse City went 27-9 in the second half of the regular season to win the Great Lakes East second half and claim its spot in the playoffs. The Pit Spitters were 45-27 overall during the regular season.
The Growlers earned their playoff spot by winning the division in the first half of the season.
