Spranger Ready to Continue Success of Clare Football

CLARE — The Clare football team will start its preparation for the season next month with a new head coach for the first time in 34 years.

Steven Spranger takes over for Kelly Luplow, who retired this offseason after coaching the Pioneers the last 34 seasons.

Spranger has a strong familiarity with the program, not only as an assistant coach, but he was a water boy and played for Luplow in high school. He looks forward to the challenge of continuing the program’s success.

“Our motto is ‘tradition never graduates,’ and that goes with the success we have on the field, as well as the community support. So, I’m walking into a great situation for a first year coach, for sure,” Spranger said. “It’s going to be a lot different, the crowds, the atmosphere, the excitement, the intensity. I’m looking forward to it, and just feeling that community support behind you.”

Clare will once again begin season preparation with its midnight practice to start 2-a-days on Aug. 8. Their first gam will be against Freeland on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.
