Reed City Wins State Title in Clay Target Shooting, Chippewa Hills’ Kelley Ties for First

MASON — Reed City took home the overall title in the Michigan State High School Clay Target League State Tournament, recording a team total score of 482. The next highest score was Portland at 472.

Reed City had an impressive day with five of its shooters placing tied for 10th or better. J.D. Adrianse and Cooper Thomas recorded scores of 97 to tie for third place. Bryce Wein, Ryan Allen and Colton Gilland all sat tied for 10th with 96 scores.

“I’ve shot all four years of high school for Reed City, and each year I keep getting a little better and better. And this year we finally took it home. A big lift off the shoulders,” Thomas said.

Chippewa Hills’ Robert Kelley tied for first place in the High Gun category with a score of 98, tying Valley Lutheran’s Benjamin Tomandl. Big Rapids’ Noah Brandt finished tied for third place as well.

“Definitely going to be a tough competition. There always is when you’re shooting against that many people who have also been shooting since they were young,” Kelley said. “But it’s just about practice and you just got to believe in yourself.”

Manton finished in second place as a team for the Novice division with a score of 364. Shania Root had a score of 77 to finish third for Manton in the Novice Female division. Sanford Meridian’s William Francis finished in second place in the Jr. Varsity – Male division with a score of 96.

The National Championship will be held from July 6 to 10 at the MTA Homegrounds in Mason, Mich.
