Red Wings Hire Lalonde as Next Head Coach

DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings announced that Derek Lalonde will be their 28th head coach in franchise history on Thursday.

Lalonde spent the last four seasons as the assistant coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, helping them win a pair of Stanley Cup titles. He joined the Tampa Bay franchise in 2018 when current Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman was the Lightning’s vice president and general manager.

Lalonde also has experience as a head coach. He was the Iowa Wild’s head coach from 2016-18 and he also coached the Toledo Walleye from 2014-16.

“I’m thrilled to be named head coach of the Red Wings,” said Lalonde in the team’s press release. “I’d like to thank Chris Ilitch and the entire Ilitch family, as well as Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings management team for entrusting me with the opportunity to lead this historic franchise. I’m ready to get to work with our group. There’s a very bright future ahead in Detroit.”

Lalonde has some familiarity with Michigan as well, as he was the Ferris State assistant coach from 2002-06.
