Roque Presented Key to the City in Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE — USA women’s hockey silver medalist and Sault Ste. Marie native Abby Roque held a meet-and-greet in her hometown on Saturday, where she became the third person to be presented the key to the city, joining Gene Simmons of KISS and former Red Wing head coach Jeff Blashill.

Roque is back in her hometown where she is hosting a youth hockey camp along with Saturday night’s meet-and-greet and the Kewadin Casino. She has one more camp on Sunday.

Roque signed autographs and took photos with her hometown supporters and former coaches, but didn’t expect to be presented the key to the city.

“When they said there were only two other people, I was like I don’t know why you are giving it to me then!” Roque said. “I mean obviously it’s an honor because both are amazing people, who are obviously very famous, on a very large stage, so I am very pleased to have the key. Obviously it’s a huge honor.”

Roque gave the city a signed Olympic hockey jersey, which will be displayed in the Pullar Arena, the same place she played high schoo hockey.
