BIG RAPIDS — Grand Valley State picked up a pair of conference wins over Ferris State on Thursday in softball, winning 5-0 and 8-4 in the doubleheader.
The Lakers had a big performance by Hannah Beatus in the first game in the circle. She pitched a complete game, striking out 10 and allowing two hits in the shutout. Ferris State didn’t get a hit until the fifth inning.
In the second game, Ferris State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a Maddie Gkekas double off the left field fence to drive in two runs.
Grand Valley State took the lead in the sixth, when Megan Koenigshof grounded to second base with the runner taking off for home plate. Josie Prince fired home in an attempt to get the out, but Jaye Guichelaar scored to give the Lakers the lead. They scored seven runs in the final two innings to secure the win.
Ferris State has now lost seven straight games and falls to 1-9 at home and 12-27 overall. They hold a 3-13 conference record. They’ll look to bounce back on the road on Saturday with a doubleheader against Purdue Northwest starting at 2 p.m.
