Central Michigan Sweeps Ball State in Softball Doubleheader

MT. PLEASANT — Central Michigan held a doubleheader against Ball State for the Chippewas’ first home games of the season, and the Chips won both games on walk-off plays. CMU won the first game, 4-3, and won the second game, 9-8, in nine innings.

CMU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of its first game, but Ball State tied it up with a 3-run home run by Faith Hensley in the seventh inning. The Chippewas responded in the bottom half on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Caitlyn Britton.

The Chips got off to an even better start in their second game, scoring six runs in the first two innings. Britton started the scoring with a 2-RBI single to center field in the first inning.

Ball State slowly got their way back into the game and tied it up, 7-7, in the seventh on a base-hit by Amaia Daniel to center field to send it to extras.

In the ninth, McKayla Timmons gave the Cardinals an 8-7 lead on a sacrifice fly to center field. But the Chippewas once again had a response in the bottom half, starting with Britton sending a home run to center field to tie it up and then with two outs, Sammi Mills scored on a wild pitch.

Central Michigan improves to 13-12 overall and 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference. They will look to complete the sweep over Ball State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
