Roque’s Parents React to Seeing Daughter in Olympics

SAULT STE. MARIE — Sault Ste. Marie’s Abby Roque had a successful trip to Beijing where she helped USA win a silver medal in women’s hockey. She had multiple fans back home watching, including her parents.

Jim and Julia Roque could not attend the Olympics due to COVID-19 restrictions, but they were able to watch the games from home. They have watched their daughter compete in multiple hockey games at different levels, but watching her in the Olympics definitely brought out the nerves.

“I was nervous to watch her play,” Jim Roque said. “You wanted to her do well and perform, and I think there’s really more nerves about the whole thing just because COVID. Because any day they did testing, you could be out of the games or just get it through the whole process the last two months just to play the games.”

“I think more of a relief than anything else for me, especially with I mean, she had tightrope surgery on her ankle, broke her hand. She hadn’t played since October in the highly-competitive game,” Julia Roque said. “So just to see her get out there to play and then have that opportunity.”

Roque scored one goal in her first Olympics for Team USA.
