Hart’s Run Ends in Quarterfinals Against Imlay City in Wrestling

KALAMAZOO — Hart made its third straight quarterfinal appearance in wrestling on Friday, but the Pirates could not advance to the semifinals, losing to Imlay City, 45-24, in wrestling.

The Pirates found themselves in a 21-3 hole following the first six weight classes of the match, but a technical fall victory by Mason Cantu (145) and pins by Zane Thomas (160) and Alex Hicks (171) brought them back within seven with four weight classes to go. Imlay City won the three of the final four, with Leo Guadarrama being the only Pirate to win at 215 by major decision.

“Even though some of (my teammates) are upset with the way they wrestled I wouldn’t change it for the world,” Thomas said. “They’re my family now and I would do anything for them because I know they would do anything for me.”

Hart ends its season with a 30-6 record.

“[We had] three kids that were state qualifiers — one was a state placer — that left the team throughout the year, Hart head coach Brad Altland said. “These young kids just stepped up and went to work. Kids cut down to weight where they weren’t at earlier in the year to fill holes. And they did it for the team and they did it for each other.
