Detroit Lions’ Calvin Johnson Inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame

CANTON, Ohio — Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Sunday night in Canton, Ohio.

Johnson, aka “Megatron” was among three first-ballot inductees this year, joining quarterback Peyton Manning and former Michigan great Charles Woodson, all who had their busts unveiled during the enshrinement ceremony.

“Lions fans, the city of Detroit, when we were 0-16, you never stopped showing up. You were disappointed but you never stopped showing up,” Johnson said. “Every week, you showed up, and this motivated me to do the same thing for you. You loved me and my family unconditionally over these 15 years. I want you to know, Michigan is our home. Detroit is our city. And Lions fans are our pride.”

Johnson, who retired after the 2015 season at age 30 after nine NFL seasons with the Lions, was inducted as the second-youngest Hall of Famer voted in on his first ballot behind Gale Sayers.

The six-time pro bowler led the NFL twice in receiving yardage and still owns the single-season mark of 1,964 yards in 2012. He is also the Lions’ franchise leader in catches (731), yards receiving (11,619) and touchdown receptions (83).

Johnson was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the franchise’s third WR pick in four years.
