TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Pit Spitters lost a key game against the Kingfish, 5-4, in extra innings on Friday at home.
Christian Faust boosted the Pit Spitters into extra innings with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth, which scored Trey Yunger to tie the game, 4-4.
In the top of the 10th, Justin Janas doubled to left, scoring Cam Redding from second base and giving Kenosha the 5-4 lead. The Pit Spitters had a chance to tie it or take the lead with runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom half of the 10th, but Tito Flores popped out for the final play of the game.
The Pit Spitters’ lead in the Great Lakes East Division dwindled down to 1.0 game in front of the Kingfish and 2.0 games ahead of the Jackrabbits.
The standings become more important as the end of the first half of the season nears, as the top teams in each division at that time secure a spot in the postseason at the end of the year. The for teams and the 36th game will mark the halfway point for teams. All three teams at the top of the Great Lakes East Division are nearing that mark and they are now all within two games of each other.
The Pit Spitters will have a chance to bounce back against Kenosha on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at home.
