Sim, Nowlin Lead Michigan Women’s Open After Round One

THOMPSONVILLE — Kelly Sim and Tristyn Nowlin will carry a slight lead into the second round of the Michigan Women’s Open after the two recorded a 4-under at Crystal Mountain Resort on Monday.

Sim, , recorded five birdies on the back nine of the Mountain Ridge course, while Nowlin, , had two birdies in her final three holes to move into a tie with Sim. Both golfers felt great after their first day.

“Just make sure I’m having fun out there and enjoying every shot and realizing that, you know, sometimes you’re not gonna be in the best position,” Nowlin said. “But just kind of being creative with it and saying, ‘You know what? At least I have the ability to hit this shot,’ and just really enjoy the day because it’s beautiful up here.”

“Just in my own little bubble,” Sim said. “I had really good playing competitors. They were really nice. And yeah, I was just sticking a lot of close pins so just good chances and they were just going in.”

Right behind the two leaders is Taylor Kehoe of Ontario, who . She sits at 3-under and in third place after her round. Six golfers are tied for fourth place at 2-under, including five from Michigan.

Traverse City’s Anika Dy finished her round at even, with two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine. She’s tied for 14th, looking to claim her second Michigan Women’s Open title in three years as an amateur.
