Pit Spitters Seek Host Families for Summer Players

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Pit Spitters are still seeking host families for their players before their season starts in just over two weeks. They are in need of families to host five players.

The families would commit to hosting the players from Memorial Day weekend through Aug. 22 at the latest, depending on how far the team makes in the playoffs.

The team also provides some benefits to families that decide to host one of its players. Each family member living in the house will receive one free season ticket, along with free parking at the ballpark. They also have a 25% discount at the Pit Shop for merchandise. They also host a Family Appreciation Night at the end of the season.

The Thompson family has hosted players for five years, three of which have been with the Pit Spitters. Their family consists of the mother and father, Robyn and Mark, along with a 13-year-old boy named Tyler and 9-year-old girl named Brooklyn.

They said that the cost of hosting a player isn’t too much because they travel a lot for games and eat at the ballpark as well. It mostly comes down to extra breakfast and soap, toothpaste and other housing necessities.

The Thompsons also said that it essentially brings an extra member into their family for a summer and well-beyond as they follow their lives beyond Traverse City. And it’s a fun summer for the children to have an extra “sibling” in the house.

“It’s nice because they actually are really good at going outside,” Robyn said. “So (Tyler’s) a baseball player and they love coming and teaching them and helping them and trying to make them better. It’s fun to go fishing, or out on the boat, golfing, anything.”
