Cheboygan Seeks First Conference Title Since 2017

CHEBOYGAN — The Cheboygan girls soccer team is the lone team at the top of the Northern Michigan Soccer League, as the Chiefs haven’t lost a conference game this year. They last won a conference title in 2017.

They had a great start to the season, outscoring opponents, 39-1, in their first six games. They had a pair of losses against non-conference opponents, Boyne City and Marquette.

The Chiefs needed a bounce-back game, and it came in a key 5-2 victory over McBain NMC in a battle for the top of the conference.

“We were in a rut that last two games,” Cheboygan senior Marah Brake said. “I think it really shows that we can come out of that cleanly and play good against anyone that comes out.”

Cheboygan will once again have a tough district in Division 3, which will feature talented teams like Boyne City and Elk Rapids, but if they can find the right momentum, they can put together a postseason run.

“When we get it clicking, it’s really fun to watch,” Cheboygan head coach Tom Markham said. “We wanna stay on the pedal and just keep working at the stuff that’s gotten us here. Keep working on our touches. Keep hitting the rock pile at practice and day by day we’re gonna get a little better.”
