Committee to Reinstate CMU Men’s Track and Field to Host Virtual Town Hall Sunday

MT. PLEASANT — The Committee to Reinstate Central Michigan University Men’s Track and Field will hold a virtual town hall meeting on Sunday at 7 p.m. where they will present their ideas on the reinstatement of the program.

in May 2020 as part of its planning budget amid the coronavirus pandemic, but the university needs to find a new men’s sport to maintain its Division I status. to hold onto that status until they find a new program.

The committee consists of 15 members from several backgrounds, but they share a common goal of bringing the program back. They argue for the reinstatement of the program based on .

“I think we just want to be a part of that solution to help them find ways to do it,” Shepherd girls track coach and committee member Carey Hammel said. “We understand that financially times are tough right now. COVID and athletic departments as a whole are having a tough time. Between our willingness to kind of help with some ideas and different things and then kind of, you know, maybe questioning their financial stance, we hope that we can help them agree with us that men’s track would be the best one to add back in.”

The decision to drop men’s track and field left CMU with 16 intercollegiate sports programs: men’s and women’s basketball, football, women’s soccer, women’s golf, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s track and field, gymnastics, women’s lacrosse, softball and volleyball.
