Scheduling Challenges Face Area ADs, Coaches

TRAVERSE CITY – If and when winter high school sports return in Michigan, athletic directors and coaches will be pressed when piecing together competition schedules.

While some winter sports teams had already started practice and conducted tryouts when the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services epidemic orders were put in place two weeks ago, competitions for most winter sports were set to kick off this week.

Between cancellations, delay and travel restrictions, establishing has a schedule has been a difficult task for high school coaches around the state, like longtime Traverse City Central hockey coach Chris Givens.

“I think I’m on my fourth scheduling attempt, maybe my fifth, it’ll probably by 6,7,8, something like that by the time we get finished,” Givens said. “Whenever we get going here, yeah it’s going to look very different from how it’s looked in the past, but the one thing we’ve kept saying to the guys is just we have to do whatever we have to do to give ourselves a chance. For my guys and the other high school kids in town, whether it’s West or the Bay Reps, they just want to play hockey.”

Central is tentatively scheduled to open its season at home on Wednesday, Jan. 6 against Cadillac.
