Cadillac Girls Cross Country Reflects on Record-Breaking Season

CADILLAC – Cross country was one fall sport that got the chance to fully complete its season, with the state meet held over two days at Michigan International Speedway.

One team that had quite showing was the Cadillac girls team.

“It was a great ending to a year that a lot of us have gone through a lot, and to have something like this is a blessing,” said head coach Tim O’Malley.

The Vikings finished fourth at the MHSAA Division 2 Lower Peninsula finals, which is the highest finish for the program, and had two all-state runners for the first time in the same season. Along with that, they were the fastest team in school history and one of their runners set a new individual school record.

With five seniors leading the way this season, they knew they had something special.

“We started out their freshman year and we went to states and we placed 15th,” O’Malley said. “Their sophomore year, 13th, last year we were 5th, and going into this year, I thought we could finish… not that you never want to win a state meet or didn’t think you could when you go there but all the stars have to be aligned in a certain direction most years for you to do some damage, but this year I thought that we could do it.”

Vikings get to hold their head high for the 2020 season and are thankful for the accomplishments, but most of all they are grateful for completing their year.

“With this year, we were just blessed to have a season that our athletic department and school system worked with us. And the parents too,” said O’Malley said.

After the state meet, the team was welcomed home with police cars, firetrucks and community members.
