BROOKLYN – Nathan Walker led the Fremont boys cross country team to its 10th state championship at the MHSAA Division 2 Lower Peninsula finals at Michigan International Speedway on Friday.
Walker won the individual state title with a time of 15:19.39 as the Packers won the team state title with 61 points. St. Johns came home in second with 126 while Otsego was third with 187.
Fremont junior Conor Somers was fifth with a time of 16:02.55.
Petoskey finished in 14th (374).
On the girls side, Petoskey captured its first state championship, edging East Grand Rapids by 11 points. Grand Rapids Christian was third (143) while Cadillac was fourth (206).
Petoskey’s Emma Squires was first overall with a time of 17:54.56. Teammate Cambrie Smith was ninth with a time of 19:01.69.
Shepherd came home in sixth (254).
At the Division 1 girls meet, Traverse City Central finished runner-up for the second straight year. Ann Arbor Pioneer won the state title.
Central’s Julia Flynn came home in third place.
On the boys side, Traverse City Central finished sixth with 265 points. Romeo won the championship while Caledonia was second. Traverse City West was 20th.
