Beal City, Johannesburg-Lewiston Meet in District Final Rematch

Beal City

A rematch of a 2019 Division 8 district final is on the docket Friday as Johannesburg-Lewiston welcomes in Beal City with a district championship on the line.

Beal City has been pushing the next man up mentality throughout the season and in the playoffs. The Aggies have recorded postseason wins over Coleman (56-0) and 2018 Division 8 runner-up Breckenridge (31-19).

“What works really well with us is that the last few years we’ve been practicing all together,” Beal City coach Brad Gross said. “There’s JV guys that mix in all year long, so when it’s their time to shine they’re ready. I wouldn’t say they’re always ready but they’ve actually had some experience practicing with the guys.”

Beal City-Johannesburg-Lewiston Series
2019 – Beal City 33, Johannesburg-Lewiston 20
2014 – Beal City 53, Johannesburg-Lewiston 27
2012 – Beal City 49, Johannesburg-Lewiston 16
2011 – Beal City 43, Johannesburg-Lewiston 20

After rolling to a 49-16 win over Alcona in the first round, Johannesburg-Lewiston (8-0) was awarded a forfeit win last week against Frankfort. The Cardinals have not faced much of a challenge this fall, outscoring opponents 361-77.

A win for Beal City on Friday would give the Aggies their second district title since 2014 while Johannesburg-Lewiston is seeking its first district championship since 2012.

The Aggies (7-1) are 4-0 all-time against the Cardinals, with all four prior meetings taking place in the postseason.

The winner of Friday’s game faces either Bark River-Harris (5-2) or Iron Mountain (7-1) in a regional final next week.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
