Top 5 Area Games: Week 2

Week 2 of the 2020 high school football season in northern Michigan features several key conference matchups.

Friday, Sept. 25
Petoskey (1-0, 1-0 Big North) at Traverse City Central (1-0, 1-0 Big North), 7 p.m. – Fresh off a 40-point win over Traverse City West, Central turns its attention to a Petoskey team that picked up its third straight win over rival Gaylord last week. Petoskey’s last win in this series was a 16-13 victory back in 2014. Central leads the all-time series at 21-13 dating back to 1950.

Friday, Sept. 25
Harrison (1-0, 1-0 Jack Pine) at Beaverton (1-0, 1-0 Jack Pine), 7 p.m. – Our Sports Overtime Game of the Week, this is a meeting between two of the top three teams in the Jack Pine Conference. Beaverton has won four straight in the series, including a 43-22 meeting last year. Despite dropping the previous four meetings, Harrison still leads the all-time series at 28-26 since 1950.

Friday, Sept. 25
East Jordan (1-0, 0-0 NMFL Legacy) at Harbor Springs (1-0, 1-0 NMFL Legacy), 7 p.m. – Harbor Springs rolled to a 49-0 conference-opening victory over St. Ignace last week while East Jordan held off Elk Rapids for a 14-6 win. The Rams have won the last six meetings in this series including a 34-33 win a year ago. The Red Devils are seeking their first winning campaign since 2016. East Jordan leads the all-time series at 36-30-2 dating back to 1950.

Friday, Sept. 25
Pickford (1-0, 1-0 Great Lakes East) at Cedarville (1-0, 1-0 Great Lakes East), 7 p.m. – Cedarville snapped a five-game skid against Engadine with a big 52-0 win last Friday while Pickford rolled to an 80-20 victory over Superior Central. The Panthers have won the last four meetings by an average score of 50.7-12.5. Pickford leads the all-time series at 34-27-2.

Friday, Sept. 25
Sault Ste. Marie (1-0) at Marquette (1-0), 7 p.m. – A meeting of former Great Northern U.P. Conference opponents, the Blue Devils pulled off a surprising 14-7 win over Traverse City St. Francis a week ago. The Redman have won four straight in the series and are coming off a 41-18 league win over Menominee. Marquette leads the all-time series at 29-26-1 dating back to 1950.
