MISportsNow is putting the spotlight on northern Michigan high school senior student-athletes who had their seasons cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Petoskey senior Jimmy Flom is set to join Northern Michigan University’s first-year Alpine ski program.

A 2020 MHSAA Division 2 state champion in the slalom, Flom joins an NMU program that will compete as members of the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association and train at Marquette Mountain.

Flom will also follow his high school coach, Erik Lundteigen, to NMU. Lundteigen was recently hired by NMU to head up its new men’s and women’s Alpine ski programs. Lundteigen led the Northmen to five MHSAA Division 2 state championships and a runner-up finish in 2019.

“It’s pretty crazy just to even think that, let alone it will be the first year,” Flom said about following his coach to NMU. “It’s kind of always been a dream of mine to ski somewhere in college. He’s led me so far and furthering my abilities and ski racing and I can’t wait to see what else he brings me.”
