MISportsNow is putting the spotlight on northern Michigan high school senior student-athletes who had their seasons cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Onaway’s Matthew Grant recently concluded an outstanding prep wrestling career that saw him medal four times at the individual state finals and lead the Cardinals to three straight regional championships.

A runner-up in Division 4 at 135 pounds as a sophomore, Grant is set to continue his wrestling and academic careers at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York in the fall.

“First way I came in contact with the school was going to a wrestling combine at Cornell and the head coach for RIT was there,” Grant said. “I was looking for a school that was heavy into engineering because that’s what I’m interested in. And I talked with the head coach there and we actually visited there on the way home from Cornell to check out the campus. I fell in love with the campus and I really liked the head coach, so I thought it was a pretty good fit for me.”

Grant plans to study engineering. He joins a RIT teams that was ranked in the top 16 in country for NCAA Division III programs in 2019-20.
